David V. Mirch

I am an expert witness for vertical transportation systems which includes elevators. I started my career in the elevator industry in 1978 carrying tools as a helper and mechanic. I learned the industry hands on as I worked my way up from mechanic to adjuster, on to trouble shooter, then regional technical service manager and ultimately a superintendent. My invaluable experience and expertise in the industry was learned on the job.

Extensive knowledge of vertical transportation systems gives me the ability to understand each individual accident or more serious situation and answer any questions my clients have. I am able to back up any case using my vast mechanical experience. This includes code related intricacies, combing through maintenance logbooks to research maintenance records, identifying negligent maintenance practices, recreating the incident in a timeline, creating a causation report that will identify the cause of the accident and how the accident could have been prevented.

Over my 41 years in the industry I have seen and alarming change in the State of the industry towards less than adequate maintenance. Elevator companies do not designate the time and money necessary for proper maintenance practices. This decline is the cause of today’s serious accidents, entrapment's and even deaths.

The trend today is to provide “remote monitoring” for preventative maintenance and this device is used in place of qualified elevator technicians. The device may diagnose a problem and shut down the equipment, but a qualified technician can use their senses to further diagnose issues that the remote monitor simply cannot. As a trainer I diligently use the phrase “Look, Listen, Observe, Touch and Smell”, use your senses!

The International Union of Elevator Contractors only provide the most basic training as it relates to installation, maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting. The “fine tuning” training is left up to Elevator companies with their own equipment.
